June 12 – Luxembourg City

Breakfast in Ettelbruck consisted of bread, butter, cheese, jam, and coffee. It was very tasty.

We were then off to Luxembourg City by train. A 24-hour train pass was 4 €. That includes the national trains in the country, buses most anywhere. That is really cheap transport and people use it.

The City has been around for about 13 centuries. Begun is 964 A. D. or so and continuously occupied by one group or another since that time. Essentially the whole city was a fortress and from the looks of it quite formidable. Because of it’s strategic central location it has always been in on the power struggles in Europe regardless of what group you can think of. Only after a treaty in the 19th century did peace finally come to this country. The treaty basically said the cities fortifications would be destroyed so it would no longer be the focal point of most power struggles in the region.

Luxembourg City is a fascinating place.

Dinner that evening was long and lovely. Ate at a local establishment with traditional Luxembourgish meals, very delicious. This is one of those times when you see it on the menu and it sounds good order it. If it tastes good don’t ask what it is especially if you think you might not like the answer.

Once again we were exhausted when we got back to the house, another wonderful day. Tomorrow we are off to Paris.
